The second generation of prototypes, which should be close to the later series version at least externally, were the so-called Leopard 2 AV. Due to the findings from the Jom Kippur War in 1973, tank protection has been significantly improved, resulting in a transformation of tub and tower, but also the battle weight of the tank far beyond the targeted MLC 50 and therefore established the MLC 60 as a new upper limit. The bilateral study of a double-tube casematt tank at which the MLC-50 limit was maintained was an alternative to Leopard 2 development for a short time, but could not prevail.
Due to the new protection concept and the lock of retrofitting the Leopard 1, the first generation tower 14 was rebuilt to T14 mod. For reservations to laser removal knives, Leitz was built by the EMES 13 a passive rangefinder based on the correlation principle and had a base width of 350 mm. This allowed Wegmann the construction of the pointed mouse tower. Ultimately, the US demand led to a better protective concept and the available composite armor to the square form of the serial tower. An auxiliary power plant from the first prototypes configured for the electrical supply of the vehicle when the engine is stationary and for preheating is in favor of a larger tank volume. Only 30 years later, due to the experiences made during the missions in crisis areas, the additional power supply was realized. Furthermore, among other things, the fire lineage (FLA) was simplified; The optics were primarily stabilized, which designs tub bottom minesicher and embed the electronics and the hydraulics and ammunition in the tower tail. The previous night vision devices were replaced by a thermal imaging device, which, however, has not yet been available. As a main armament, on-board canons were provided in the caliber 105 mm and 120 mm. The armor consisted of normal steel, the stocking vehicle was carried out in armor steel.
