The PzKpfw IV, with 8500 units built, was the most-built tank for the Wehrmacht and formed the cornerstone of the tank divisions of Germany until 1945. The planning and development of the tank went back to 1930. At the end of 1934, work began on the prototypes for this vehicle, which were subjected to various tests by the Army Weapons Office. These were completed in 1935/36 with the award of the contract to Krupp for the construction of the tank. During the production period, improvements and upgrades were introduced into the series production. While the short 7.5-cm-KWK 37 L/24 was used at the start of production, the 7.5-cm-KWK 40 L/48 with a further increase in the penetrating power of the ammunition was used from spring 1943 onwards.
